Trees, maps, microbiology and cathedral windows appear in various levels of deconstruction as I break down my own subjectivity and become aware of how I filter my surroundings. These selected icons embody specific relationships and also represent personally resonant and lasting symbols. Trees symbolize my relationship with the natural world, maps with the man-made world, microbiology with my physiology and “humanness,” and cathedral windows with the spiritual realm.
Searching for ways this imagery overlaps and juxtaposes, I allow my iconography to layer and converge. Boundaries between elements are blurred as wood grain appears topographic and cellular entrails mimic branches and roads. The balance between structured and organic form is in the forefront with a graphic approach and lack of color using black ink and white paint and colored pencil on translucent mylar.
